Description

Numbers 95 and 97 are a pair of houses located on Gloucester Road in Malmesbury, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with a rear extension from the 19th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed limestone rubble and roughcast, featuring brick gables and axial stacks, topped with a stone slate roof. The houses have an L-shaped single-depth plan and stand two storeys high with an attic, comprising a four-window range.

The exterior includes a central doorway with timber lintels, a boarded door, and a 20th-century hipped canopy. The windows are 19th-century two-light casements. Notable architectural details include a straight joint to the right of the ridge stack, a ground-floor right-hand window with long and short jambs, and a straight joint between the central and end houses. The left-hand gable has one window and quoins, while the lower rear extension features two attached one-window houses, with the further one stepped down.

Inside Number 95, there is a collar truss roof with a rear winder stair that is split below the top, a through-passage, and an axial stack that contains a 17th-century fireplace with a round-arched niche on the right side. There is also a cupboard on the first floor beside the fireplace and curved possible former stair bays to the left of the right-hand gable fireplace. Additionally, there are attached iron railings to the sunken front area.
