Description

These are two houses with shops, likely originally a single larger house, dating from the early to mid-19th century in Bideford. The building has solid rendered walls, with faint traces of masonry markings on the front, and a hipped slate roof. A rendered chimney is on the right side-wall. It is double-fronted and double-depth, with rear wings, likely added later, on each side. The house is three storeys high, featuring a three-window range to the front, with a single-window return on the right, and a further window in an extension to the right. A late 20th-century shop front is present at number 19. Number 20 retains a late 19th-century shop front on the right-hand return, showcasing a rounded corner with a panelled pilaster, upright glazing bars designed to resemble slender shafts, patterned iron grilles above the display windows, and an entablature extending around both frontages. A raised band is located immediately below the sills on the second storey. The upper-storey windows on the front range are mostly sashes with 6 panes or 3 in the upper third-storey sashes; the left-hand second-storey window has plain sashes. A triglyphed wooden frieze is positioned below the eaves. The rear wing on the right has a 4-paned sash window with horns in the second storey and a plain sash window above. The interior has not been inspected.
