Description
No. 17 Bridgeland Street is a house that now functions as a shop. It was likely built in the 1690s and was later heightened and remodeled in the early 19th century. The front is solidly rendered, and it has a slate roof with an old red-brick chimney on the right gable end. The building has three storeys and a three-window range. The ground floor has been altered with a late 20th-century shop window, and the walling on either side features a moulded stringcourse that aligns with the window head. The upper-storey windows are plain sashes set in box-frames, with the second-storey windows aligning with those of No. 18. The middle window on the third storey is blind. The interior has not been inspected. This property was part of the Bideford Bridge Trust and was erected by John Cleverdon at an unknown date, likely in the 1690s. The first surviving lease dates to 1740 and was granted to Philip Kent, a shipwright from Bideford. The building is included for its group value.
