Description
A pair of houses built in the early or mid-19th century on Bridgeland Street, Bideford, originally designed as a single entity and with ground-floor areas subsequently converted to shops. The houses have solid rendered walls and a roof covering likely of slate. There are two rendered chimneys on each side wall; the chimney on the front right-hand side was heightened in the late 19th century using red and cream brick. The houses likely follow a single-fronted, double-depth plan.
They are three stories high with a garret, featuring a three-window front. The upper-storey windows are blind in the middle window position. The ground floor of No. 19 retains an original round-arched doorway with a 20th-century glazed door on the left, and a wide plain window probably originally containing triple sashes on the right. There is a late 20th-century shop front at No. 20. The upper-storey windows are mostly barred sashes with six panes, with the upper sashes in the third storey having three panes. A late 19th-century canted bay window is located in the second storey of No. 19, designed with a shaped base and a slated pent roof and featuring sashes with horns, those in the centre incorporating margin panes. The building has a modillioned eaves cornice. The interior was not inspected. The properties are included in the listing primarily for their contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
