Description

Nos. 13A, 14, and 14A on Bridgeland Street in Bideford are a range of shops and offices located on an important site at the rounded corner of Mill Street, built around 1890. The building features rendered solid walls and a slated roof with red ridge-tiles. There are two cream-brick chimneys on the ridge, topped with projecting red-brick courses that form entablatures. Designed in a classical style, the building stands three storeys tall and has a seven-window range. The front is divided by pilasters into bays containing two, two, one, and three windows respectively.

The ground storey includes four shop fronts, three of which are likely original, while the fourth, located in the third bay from the right, is from the late 20th century. The shop fronts have a simple design with large display windows and glazed doors, featuring entablatures with modillioned cornices. No 13A has an entrance on the splayed corner, flanked by fluted cast-iron columns, although the entablature above has been covered by late 20th-century boarding. There are three doors leading to the upper floors; the door at No 14 is original and has six moulded panels.

The second-storey windows are round-arched, with four of them designed as Venetian windows. All second-storey windows have hood-moulds that extend across each bay from pilaster to pilaster. The third-storey windows have flat shaped surrounds and moulded sills, which continue across the entire front and over the pilasters. The building is topped with a modillioned eaves-cornice. Although the interiors were not inspected, No 14 features an original half-glazed inner door with margin-panes and a tall matching fanlight.
