Description

21 and 22 Bridgeland Street are a pair of houses, with No 21 currently functioning as a shop. They were likely originally built as a single house in 1692 and later remodeled into two separate houses in 1821. The front is solidly rendered, topped with a slate roof, and features a rebuilt rendered chimney on the left gable end. The buildings rise three storeys.

No 21 has one window on the front with a doorway to the left of the ground-storey window. No 22 has two windows with a doorway located between the ground-storey windows, slightly off-centre to the left. Both doorways are round-arched with panelled reveals, flanked by Doric pilasters and an entablature, although the cornice is missing at No 21.

The windows of No 21 have been altered, featuring a mid to late 19th-century canted bay on the ground storey, while the third-storey window has been converted into a dormer. The shop window is located in the ground storey, with sash windows in the second storey, the middle light having margin-panes. The dormer is similar but has prominent perforated bargeboards on large curved brackets.

No 22 features a canted bay with a cornice on the right side of the ground storey and a three-light window above it in the second storey. Sash windows are present throughout, mostly with six panes, except for the three-paned top sashes in the third storey. The lower sashes in the ground and second storeys are now plain. The interior has not been inspected.

The building lease for this site was granted by the Bideford Bridge Feoffees in 1692 to William Linex, a brickmaker. The lease from 1821 indicates that the property had been subdivided. No 21 Bridgeland Street was listed on March 19, 1973.
