Description

No. 16 Bridgeland Street is a shop with accommodation above, built around 1890. It features a solid rendered front and a slate roof with red ridge-tiles, along with a cream and red-brick chimney at the right end of the ridge. The building stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range. The ground storey is divided into two bays by thick pilasters that support an entablature. The left bay has an original shop front with two display windows that curve inward to a recessed three-quarter-glazed door in the center; these windows do not have glazing-bars and are set on plinths of green tiles. To the right, there is a four-panelled house door.

The second-storey windows feature detached pediments, although the architrave and frieze are omitted; the left window has a triangular pediment above a three-light window, while the right window has a shallow segmental pediment. The third storey includes a moulded stringcourse that rises to form hood-moulds over the windows, and plain sashes are used throughout. The building has a bracketed eaves-cornice and a downpipe with decorated clamps and a rainwater-head. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a curved row of shops and flats that includes 15-16 Bridgeland Street and 39-41 Mill Street, and it occupies an important site at the west entrance to Bridgeland Street. It is included for its group value.
