Description

This is a house with shops, likely dating from the early 18th century, and remodelled in the mid-19th century. The building has solid rendered walls, with a small patch of red brick exposed, and a steeply-pitched slate roof. Red-brick chimney stacks are present on each gable end. It has a single-depth plan, with a short rear wing containing the staircase and an additional room to the right. The building is three storeys high and has a two-window front. A wide, mid-19th century shop front features pilasters and an entablature with a prominent bracketed cornice. A central doorway is flanked by display windows, with the window on the right likely originally designed to be open to the street. The upper-storey windows have shaped cement surrounds. Second-floor windows are wider and have paired sashes with margin panes. Third-floor windows have eight-pane sashes. The side wall facing Hart Street has house doors and matching single-light windows with margin panes. Raised quoins are visible on the right side. The interior has been significantly altered, but retains an original wood dog-leg staircase, with a square, flat-moulded cap at the bottom and balusters that appear to be boarded. The feet of the original roof trusses are visible.
