Description

The Bonded Store and Bond Cottage is a building from the early to mid 19th century located in Bideford. The front is constructed of stone rubble, while the right side wall is rendered. It features a slate roof with a gable end facing the street and has a red-brick chimney situated on the ridge between the store and the cottage. The store occupies the street frontage and includes a side passage, which is likely a later addition. The cottage forms a rear wing to the left of the store.

The building stands three storeys tall with a basement and has a three-window range. Each storey has a central loading door, and all openings are topped with segmental red-brick arches. The ground storey features studded double plank doors with the painted inscription "WICKHAM & CO LTD. BIDEFORD No 1 BOND." In front of these doors are two old steps, one made of stone and the other of wood. There is a blocked opening to the left and an old plank door to the right. Beneath the blocked opening, there is the head of a blocked basement window with a segmental stone arch. The loading doorways on the upper storeys also have studded plank doors, and above the top door, there is a projecting wooden beam with an iron hook for a hoist. The windows have plain wood frames with iron bars and wooden louvres.

The rear wall of the cottage has been altered, but the side wall facing the passage retains a window with 8-paned sashes in a box frame. The interior has not been inspected, but the passage under the store contains one end of a brick barrel-vault. The building is noted to have been owned by Thomas Wickham, as indicated on Wood's 1842 Plan of Bideford.
