Description
48 Mill Street is a house with a shop that was once a newspaper office, dating from the mid-19th century. It is likely a refronting of an earlier house that is set back from the street. The front is solidly rendered, and the building has a slate roof that is hipped at the front, with what appears to be a flat roof in front of an extension. There are red-brick chimneys on each side wall of the extension and another on the left-hand side wall of the main building.
The house has two storeys and a two-window range. The shop front, which dates from the mid to late 19th century, has been much altered. The upper-storey windows feature two-paned sashes. Above these windows is a light moulded cornice and a tall parapet that rises in the center to form a rounded pedestal for a figure of a 19th-century newspaper boy. One of the newspapers he holds is painted with the words "WESTERN 1d EXPRESS," and according to the 1973 List, it was dated 1886. Harrod's Directory for Devonshire lists the Bideford Western Express office, run by Mr. Thomas Tedrake, printer and publisher, at this location in 1878.
