Description
Heath Cottage is a small house located on Winkleigh High Street, dating from around the mid-17th century, with a 20th-century rear addition. The building features rendered stone and cob walls and has a gable-ended slate roof with a brick stack at each gable end. The original plan consists of two rooms, previously with a central passage, with the larger room on the left slightly projecting at the front. Both rooms are heated by gable-end fireplaces.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four windows, featuring early to mid-20th century two and three-light casements. The three-light window on the ground floor is positioned in a slight projection to the left of centre, and there is a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right of centre.
Inside, the right-hand room contains a fireplace with a roughly chamfered wooden lintel, while the left-hand room has a chamfered ceiling beam with hollow step stops. An original three-light chamfered wooden mullion window remains in the rear wall of the right-hand room, which is enclosed by the 20th-century addition. The roof timbers were completely replaced in the 1950s following a fire.
