Description
Garden Square Cottage is a cottage dating from around the mid-17th century, with a 19th-century addition and alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble walls, with a gable-ended slate roof and a brick stack at the right gable end. The original plan was for two rooms, later combined into one in the 20th century, featuring a fireplace in the right end wall. It’s possible the house was originally part of a larger dwelling, with passages and rooms demolished from the right-hand end. A 19th-century rear outshut was added. The exterior has an asymmetrical 3-window front. The upper floor has probably 19th-century 2-light casements to the centre and left, while the ground floor has 2-light casements to the left and 20th-century casements to the right. A gabled 20th-century porch with a part-glazed door sits to the right of centre, and 20th-century hardboard covers the passageway to the rear. Inside, an original fireplace remains, featuring a chamfered wooden lintel with ogee stops. The ceiling beams and roof timbers were replaced in the 19th or early 20th century.
