Description
J.C. Parker Butcher's Shop is a house and butcher's shop located in Winkleigh, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The building features plastered cob walls and a thatched roof, gabled to the right and half-hipped to the left end and rear wing. There is a rendered brick stack at the left-hand end and an axial brick stack for the rear wing.
The plan consists of a two-room front range with a kitchen wing behind the left-hand room and outbuildings beyond. The right-hand room was likely converted into a shop in the 20th century, with an addition behind it.
The exterior is two storeys high, displaying a regular two-window front with later 20th-century diamond leaded light casements on the first floor and to the left on the ground floor. There is a 20th-century shop window to the right on the ground floor and a plank door to the right of centre. The long wing behind the left-hand end features a 17th-century chamfered wooden window frame on the first floor, although the two mullions have been removed. Below this window, there is an inserted garage opening.
The interior was inaccessible during the survey, except for the shop area, which does not show any early features.
