Description
55 and 57 East Street is a house and shop located in Ilminster, dating from the early 18th century, with a brick addition from around 1760. The building features limestone rubble with a brick insert at the center, a pantile roof with stepped stone coping, and tall brick stacks at the center and rear of the rear wing. The central projecting gable has plain tiles and coping. The structure has an L-shaped plan with a rear wing on the inside right, which is raised up a steep slope.
The right-hand end, which is lower than the road, is two storeys high and has a two-window range with 19th-century three-light casements. The first-floor right window is set under an oak lintel, while the wall to the left features a two-storey brick inset with a vertical joint to its right and a random joint with rubblestone to its left. The ground-floor casement in this range is positioned under a flat gauged brick arch.
To the left of the center is a taller two-storey, two-window range with a projecting bay that has an ogee Dutch gable supporting two 19th-century chimney pots. This gable contains a blind ogee-arched window and a blind window below it to the right. The windows have 2/2-pane sashes with forward frames, all under flat gauged arches. In the angle to the right of the projection is a six-panel door within a wooden porch, likely from around 1800, which is now enclosed in corrugated plastic sheeting. The shop to the left is a single-storey structure with a simple 19th-century shop front. The interior has not been inspected.
