Description

Two houses, dated to the early 19th century, are located on the South side of East Street in Ilminster. The houses are stucco-faced with painted moulded stone architraves around the doors and windows, and have hipped slate roofs with brick stacks at each end and along the party wall to the left of centre. They are arranged on a double-depth plan with a two-storey layout and attic space; the front has a three-window arrangement framed by plain pilasters and a platband between floors. Number 32, situated on the right (west) side, has two windows flanking a centrally placed door. Number 34, on the left, has a 20th-century window inserted above a door, with one window on each floor to the left. All windows are 8/8-pane sash windows with horns, and both doors are six-panelled with a shallow overlight of two panes, all set within moulded frames. The rear elevation features four casement windows under segmental brick arches to the first floor, and a rubblestone and pantile lean-to. A single-storey, rubblestone wall with a cambered-headed doorway connects Number 34 to Number 36, which stands to the left. The interior of Number 32 features a large room to the front right, containing a six-panel door, a Regency-style white marble fireplace with corner roundels and a grate dating from approximately 1890, and panelled shutters to front and side windows. A cupboard staircase with a swept handrail, turned newels and stick balusters leads to the attic, which has wide oak floorboards. The property is served by a limestone rubble retaining wall with Ham Hill stone coping and gates, supporting spearhead railings with urn finials.
