Description
Angle Cottage is an 18th-century cottage that has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of limestone rubble with a plain tile and pantile roof, and brick stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan, extending to the north, with an angled wing projecting to the south-east. A flying freehold extends at first floor level over part of Kimber Cottage, No. 38 East Street.
The north front (East Street) has 20th-century windows. At ground floor, a six-panel door is situated to the right, with an angled bay window of three lights to the left. A two-light casement window is at first floor, above which is a shallow gable with ashlar coping stones. Recessed to the right is the flying freehold, featuring a two-light casement window at first floor. The eastern front to Love Lane has a gable at the right, built of rubble stone with ashlar copings, mirroring the details on the East Street front. To the left of this gable are two 20th-century windows of nine lights at ground floor level, appearing partially blocked, and two casement lights at first floor. The angle between the gabled wing and the section fronting East Street is filled with an angled blank rubble wall. The angled wing to the left of this has two ground floor windows, one with nine panes to the right and one with twelve panes to the left. The left-hand window appears to be set within a former cart entrance way, indicated by a cambered relieving arch of bricks above the window head. At first floor, a two-light 20th-century casement window is present. The south front features two French windows at ground floor, above which is a two-light casement. The projecting angled wing on the right has a half-glazed door to the ground floor on its left side and a bow window to the right. A window of two casement lights sits at the right again, also beneath a wide, cambered relieving arch related to a former cartway. At first floor, a three-light casement window and a small 20th-century window below the eaves are located here.
The interior ground floor rear room features a chamfered ceiling beam. Plank doors appear to be of 19th or 20th-century date.
The iron railings in the enclosed yard in front of the north front of the house, and the ground floor of No. 38 East Street, including the space below the first-floor western bedroom of Angle Cottage, are included in a separate listed entry (LE No. 1279519). A 19th-century brick chimney remains to full height on the east gable end and the ridge.
