Description

A row of three houses, dating from the early 19th century, located high and set back from East Street in Ilminster. The houses are built of Ham Hill stone ashlar, with a continuous slate roof and brick stacks to the gable ends and party walls. The right gable end has stepped stone coping and a moulded kneeler, while the right return is limestone rubble with inset brick flues.

The houses are two storeys high. Numbers 33 and 35 are symmetrical with a three-window front, while Number 35A has a two-window front. Number 33, the westernmost house, has a painted render facade with late 19th-century two-over-two-pane sash windows and a 20th-century door with overlight. The central house, Number 35, has eight-over-eight-pane sash windows, and a 20th-century door with overlight featuring lozenge-shaped panes. Number 35A has steps leading up to an entrance through a passage on the left, which is accessed through a round arch with overlight. The first-floor windows are eight-over-eight-pane sashes, while the ground floor, which likely formerly functioned as a shop, has been built out towards the street to accommodate a 20th-century restaurant. The interiors were not inspected.

Subsidiary features include a Flemish-bond revetment wall with dentilling below the stone coping, incorporating steps leading to Number 33. Ham Hill stone gate piers flank the steps: the left pier, with a cornice and pyramidal cap, is connected to the house by a rubblestone wall supporting spearhead railings across the terrace; the right pier has been reconstructed on a larger scale to form the quoin of the restaurant.
