Description

B. England Hairdressers is a house and shop located in Chulmleigh, likely dating from the 18th century, although it may include earlier elements. The building was refronted in the late 19th century. It features a brick facade over a stone rubble structure, with timber framing of light scantling and brick infill on the sides, while the rear is made of rendered stone rubble and cob. The roofs are slate with gable ends.

The layout consists of a front range that includes a shop, which is a single large room that was altered in the 20th century. There is a long range at a right angle to the rear left side, divided into three sections, each with a single room plan. The rear section serves as a lofted outbuilding, and there are separate side entrances to the two rear sections.

The exterior is three storeys high with a two-window range. The upper storeys have four-paned sash windows. The late 19th-century shop window spans the width of the facade, featuring a plain fascia, a large canted window on the left, and a smaller canted window on the right, both supported by slender cast iron colonettes. There are 20th-century doors in the center and at the right end. The left side of the rear ranges faces a cobbled carriageway, with a 12-paned sash window above a 16-paned sash window to the left of a 20th-century three-light window above a horizontal sliding sash. A shallow porch and plank door lead to the middle section, and there is a loft door above a plank door to the left of the window opening in the rear section. The interior has not been inspected.
