Description
London House and Colnet House is a house that has been divided into two separate residences. It was built around 1870, with some alterations made in the early 20th century and a rear extension added. The building features rendered stone rubble, while the rear sections are made of brick. It has a slate roof with a timber cornice and brick end stacks, including a stack at the gable end of the rear kitchen range.
The original layout of the house appears to have included three main rooms. There is a direct entrance into a large room on the left side, with two equally sized narrower rooms on either side of the entrance passage to the right. This passage leads to a two-storey gable-ended rear kitchen wing, which has a cellar behind the right-hand room, forming an L-shaped plan. The principal dog-leg staircase is located on the left side in a gabled stair projection that is at right angles to the passage, situated behind the middle room in the angle of the L-shape. The division of the two properties occurs on the left side of the entrance passage, but Colnet House on the right retains the main staircase.
The interior of London House has been altered in the 20th century, with the large room on the left end being divided into two rooms and a staircase added to the rear of what is now the entrance hall. This staircase is part of the two-storey gable-ended rear wing that was added when the house was divided, providing a kitchen wing for London House and a shared covered courtyard between the two properties at the back of the two staircases.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high with a four-window range. All the windows are late 19th-century 12-paned sashes with margin glazing bars, except for the second bay from the left, which has a narrow four-paned sash above a six-panelled door with an overlight. Colnet House features a 20th-century door. Inside, some 19th-century joinery remains, and the right-hand room of London House has an Adam-style chimneypiece and a ceiling centrepiece.
