Description
The Globe is a public house located in Chulmleigh, originally built around 1880 as two adjoining houses, with the left-hand house incorporating a shop. The building is constructed from rendered stone rubble and features slate roofs with gable end brick stacks, one of which has toothed capping.
The interior has been completely altered in the 20th century, but it likely originally consisted of two symmetrical houses with a central passage and two rooms each, with the left-hand house's ground floor used as a shop.
The exterior is two storeys high. The left-hand house has a symmetrical five-window range, all featuring two-paned sashes with margin glazing bars. The windows have plain architraves with peaked lintels. The large shop window includes a doorway framed by plain moulded pilasters and an entablature, with three large panes and a canted left end leading to a recessed four-panelled door, the upper two panels of which are glazed. French doors have been inserted in the window opening at the right end, and there is a blocked window to the right of the shop window.
The right-hand house has a symmetrical three-window range, with all windows being 16-paned sashes. The ground floor features 12-paned sashes flanking a central 16-paned sash that has been inserted in a blocked doorway. This house served as the home of the Literary and Scientific Society in the late 19th century and was revived in 1925 as a men's club, which closed in 1970.
