Description
Stonewell Tavern is a public house that was originally two houses, dating from the early 18th century and early 19th century, with alterations made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. The main part of the building, which forms the left half, is an early 19th-century structure made of coursed and squared sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings and quoins, with random rubble on the sides and rear. It has a slate roof with gable chimney stacks and a double-depth plan. The entrance is located to the right, accessed by a flight of six steps that run parallel to the front wall. The building has three storeys above a basement and consists of two bays. All openings have raised plain surrounds. The second-floor windows are sashed without glazing bars, while the other windows are late 20th-century replacements that resemble the originals but have top-hung casements.
To the right is the earlier part of the building, which originally had three low storeys but now has two. This section is rendered and has a composition tile roof. Recently, the ground level was altered to include a large tripartite window with two, six, and two transomed lights, which incorporates the doorway at the right-hand end. The upper floor features a small three-light casement window located just below the eaves.
