Description
129 and 131 St Leonards Gate are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the late 18th century and were altered around 1900. The buildings are constructed of sandstone ashlar in narrow courses, with coursed and squared rubble on the sides and rear, topped with slate roofs featuring plain coped gables. The layout is double-depth, with linked shop doorways at the center and a deep chimney stack above the party wall. Each house has rear extensions on the left side. They stand three storeys high, likely above cellars, with a single wide bay for each house. The ground floor was modified around 1900 to include shop fronts, with fascias supported by three fluted stone brackets. The windows have plain surrounds and 4-pane sashes, and the lintels of the second-floor windows extend to create a deep eaves band. Notably, the right-hand gable of No. 131 features a tall stair window.
