Description
The Toll-House is a former toll-house that has been converted into a private house, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of partially rendered stone rubble and features a hipped slate roof. The building has an asymmetrical two-room plan and is situated at the junction of Fore Street and New Street, backing onto Rainbow House.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a five-sided shape, with the main entrance front displaying a two-window range. The windows are 20th-century casements. The entrance features a plank door topped with a segmental pointed overlight that has a Gothick glazing pattern and a central keystone depicting a female head. On the right end facing Fore Street, there are pointed arched windows in the Gothick style on each floor, which have intersecting glazing bars and three-light casements with three panes per light.
Inside, a blocked doorway leading to Rainbow House suggests that the Toll-House was once part of the adjoining property. In the mid to late 19th century, it was used as a sorting office when Rainbow House served as the town post office.
