Description
The Town Pump is an early 19th-century town pump located on the east side of Fore Street in Chulmleigh, designed by J. D. Young and Sons of Barnstaple. It is made of cast iron and features a tall, octagonal shaft divided into two stages, with the upper stage slightly narrower. The base has bar stops on the four main sides and pyramid stops at the moulded base. There is a cast iron pump handle on the south side. The pump is topped with an ogee cap that supports a late 19th-century glass lantern, which is held by wrought iron brackets and adorned with cresting and mythical heads at the corners. The pump is positioned in the center of Fore Street, just west of the former Kings Arms, and the glass lantern replaced an ornate wrought iron name plaque that once directed travelers to the inn.
