Description

WINKLEIGH FORE STREET (north side), SS 6308 Winkleigh 11/166 Fircroft GV II Cottage. Probably mid to later C17 with C18 and C19 additions. Plastered cob walls. Thatch roof, half-hipped to right-hand end, gabled to left end and rear wing which has corrugated iron roof. Brick stack on rubble base at right-hand end and brick stack at gable-end of rear wing. Plan: presently 1-room plan with fireplace at right-hand end and a rear wing which is probably C18 extended in the C19. It is possible, however, that the cottage once formed part of a larger house extending to the left into what is now the adjoining property. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1-window front of large later C20 3-light casements without glazing bars. Early C20 panelled and part-glazed door to left. Long rear wing behind right-hand end. Interior inaccessible at time of survey.
