Description
Fircroft is a cottage located on the north side of Fore Street in Winkleigh, likely dating from the mid to late 17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The cottage features plastered cob walls and a thatch roof, which is half-hipped at the right-hand end and gabled at the left end and rear wing, the latter having a corrugated iron roof. There is a brick stack on a rubble base at the right-hand end and another brick stack at the gable end of the rear wing. The current layout consists of a single room with a fireplace at the right-hand end and a rear wing, which is probably from the 18th century but was extended in the 19th century. It is possible that this cottage was once part of a larger house that extended into the adjoining property on the left. The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has one window, featuring a large later 20th-century three-light casement without glazing bars. To the left, there is an early 20th-century panelled and part-glazed door. A long rear wing extends behind the right-hand end. The interior was inaccessible during the survey.
