Description
Over-Across is a cottage dating from around the mid-17th century, with a later 17th century or early 18th century wing and 19th and 20th century additions. The building has rendered cob and rubble walls, with a thatched gable-ended roof on the main range, slate on the extension, and corrugated asbestos on the projecting wing. There is a brick stack at the left-hand end of the thatched section and a rubble stack at the gable end of the wing.
Originally, the cottage had a one or two-room plan, heated by a stack at the left end. It was enlarged by adding a heated wing at the front of the right-hand end in the later 17th or early 18th century. A small 20th century addition was made at the right end of the original house, and the addition at the left end likely started as a 19th century outbuilding.
The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window L-shaped front with the wing projecting from the right-hand end. The original central part has 20th century one and two-light casements. The extension at the left end includes a 20th century glazed door to the right and garage doors to the left. The wing also has 20th century casements, with one on the first floor and two below, and a porch in the angle to the left that has a 20th century plank door behind it.
The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey but may contain early features such as open fireplaces, ceiling beams, and original roof trusses.
