HARTLAND MILFORD Over-Across

GV II

Cottage. Circa mid C17 with later C17 or early C18 wing and C19 and C20 additions. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Gable-ended roof is thatched to main range with slate to its extension and corrugated asbestos to the projecting wing. Brick stack at left-hand end of thatched roof section, rubble stack at gable-end of wing. Plan: originally a 1 or 2-room plan cottage, heated by a stack at the left end, enlarged by the addition of a heated wing at the front of its right-hand end in the circa later C17 or early C18. Small C20 addition made at right end of original house and the addition at its left end probably originated as a C19 outbuilding. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window L-shaped front with wing projecting from right-hand end. The original part at the centre has C20 1 and 2-light casements. The extension at its left end has a C20 glazed door to the right with garage doors to its left. The wing also has C20 casements, one on the 1st floor and two below with a porch in the angle to the left which has a C20 plank door behind. Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but may contain early features such as open fireplaces, ceiling beams and original roof trusses.
