Description
Brook Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century, with 19th and 20th-century additions. It features rendered cob walls and a thatched roof that is hipped to the left and gabled to the right end. There is a projecting rendered rubble stack at the right-hand end, which has a slate drip course and a brick shaft. Originally, the cottage had a one-room plan with a fireplace at the right gable end. It was subdivided into two rooms in the late 19th or early 20th century, and a 19th-century outshut was added centrally at the rear. A further single-storey extension was built behind the left-hand end in the 20th century.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a regular two-window front featuring 19th-century two-light small-paned casements. There is a 20th-century lean-to thatched porch to the right of centre, which has a plank door. The rear wall has one-storey extensions. Inside, there is a large open fireplace with rough granite jambs and a chamfered wooden lintel, along with a roughly chamfered cross-beam. The insubstantial straight principal rafters, which are partially visible on the first floor, are likely from the 18th or 19th century.
