Description

Fir Cottage and Westbury are a pair of cottages dating from the late 17th century and probably the 18th century. They are constructed with rendered cob and rubble walls. Fir Cottage features a thatched roof with a gable at the right end, while Westbury has a gable-ended slate roof. Fir Cottage includes a large projecting rendered rubble or cob rear lateral stack and an axial brick stack. Westbury has a projecting rendered rubble stack at the left gable end, with a brick shaft and a 20th-century brick shaft set in from the eaves.

In terms of layout, Fir Cottage is likely the earlier of the two, with a two-room plan that may include a central passage. The right-hand room is heated by the rear lateral stack, while the left-hand room is heated by the axial stack. Westbury has a smaller two-room plan, with the left-hand room heated by the axial stack.

Both cottages are two storeys high. Westbury, on the left, has an asymmetrical two-window front featuring 20th-century one, two, and four-light casements, with a plank door located to the left of centre. Fir Cottage also has an asymmetrical two-window front with 20th-century two-light casements. The left side of Fir Cottage projects and includes a 20th-century lean-to porch in the angle, which has a stable-type door. The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey.
