SAMPFORD COURTENAY SAMPFORD COURTENAY SS 60 SW 11/188 Fir Cottage and Westbury II

Pair of cottages. Circa late C17 and probably C18. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Fir Cottage has thatch roof gabled to right end. Westbury has gable ended slate roof. Fir Cottage has large projecting rendered rubble or cob rear lateral stack and axial brick stack. Westbury has projecting rendered rubble stack at left gable end with brick shaft and C20 brick shaft set in from the eaves. Plan: Fir Cottage is probably the earlier with a 2-room plan possibly with central passage, rignt-hand room heated by rear lateral stack left-hand room by axial stack. Westbury has smaller 2-room plan with left-hand room heated by axial stack. Exterior: 2 storeys. Westbury to left has asymmetrical 2-window front of C20 1, 2 and 4-light casements. Plank door to left of centre. Fir Cottage has asymmetrical 2-window front of C20 2-light casements. The left-hand side of the house projects with a C20 leanto porch in the angle which has a stable-type door. Interior inaccessible at time of survey.
