Description

The Old Forge is a house that features some medieval elements, likely modified significantly in the 17th century and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has plastered cob and rubble walls and a hipped thatch roof with one axial brick stack. The original layout is unclear due to later changes, but it may have originally consisted of two rooms at the center of the current structure. A tile forge was added to the left side, possibly in the 17th century, based on window evidence. The building was further extended at the right-hand end in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front on the original part to the left. The thatch roof extends in a catslide over the left side, supported by a granite post below. In the angle between the catslide and the main house is a small two-light wooden mullion window with a chamfered frame and a diamond-section mullion. There are also 20th-century two-light casements and a 20th-century plank door at the right-hand end of the older section. To the left of this door, on the ground floor, is a 15th-century two-light wooden mullion window with trefoiled heads and carved spandrels. The addition at the right-hand end is recessed, with its end part slightly projecting and featuring mid to late 20th-century casements. The interior was inaccessible during the survey.
