Description

47 and 49 Stowupland Street is a house and shop dating from the early 17th century. It features a roughcast and colourwashed timber frame, with a 20th-century brick gable end on the west side and a plain tile roof. The front wing faces the road and has a rear cross wing behind it. The building is two storeys high and consists of three wide bays. There is a 20th-century shopfront to the left and a plank door to the right. Next to the shopfront is a sash window with 2/2 glazing bars, and next to the plank door is another sash window with 8/8 glazing. On the first floor, there are two 2-light casements and one 3-light casement, all of which are early 19th century. The gabled roof has a central ridge stack. The rear wing has been converted from three houses into a bakery, featuring 20th-century details.

Inside, the ground floor has chamfered bridging beams, and the principal studs have jowled tops, with the frame being generally close studded. There is a winder stair located to the north of the stack. The rear wing has a roof structure made of upper crucks, with one pair visible. The timber frame of the main west gable remains intact behind the 20th-century brick, and the main roof consists of principals, taper-tenoned butt purlins, and collars.
