Description

Three houses, originally a pair, on Stowupland Street, dating from the late 15th and 16th centuries, and significantly altered since. The houses are timber-framed, now plastered and whitewashed with added brick. They have plain tile gabled roofs. The street elevation resembles a Wealden house type, with a recessed central bay flanked to the right and left by jettied first-floor sections. The roofline of number 26 is lower than the rest. Number 22 has been refaced with 19th-century brick and has a late 19th-century part-glazed door. It has two large 2/2 sash windows, dating from the 19th century, either side of the door. The jettied first floor is clad in fish-scale tile hanging, lit by two 2-light casements. A slated outshut is located at the rear. Number 24 has a plank door and a late 19th-century glazed panel door. A 2/2 sash window is on the left, and a smaller 2-light casement on the first floor. An internal gable-end stack is situated to the north. A brick rear cross wing is present with a pantiled roof. Number 26 has a late 19th-century glazed panel door; a late 20th-century top-hung casement to the left of the door. The jettied first floor is lit by one single-light casement. An internal gable-end stack is located to the south. A timber-framed cross wing is visible at the rear.
