Description

139 King Street is a house and shop dating from the early 17th century, with remodels from the mid-18th century and later. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick and stands three storeys tall with a three-window range. The 20th-century shop front projects from the façade. To the left, there is a six-panelled door beneath a plain overlight. The first floor features three 6/6 unhorned sash windows set within flush frames and topped with gauged skewback arches. A platband runs along the second floor, which has three similar sash windows, although the glazing bars are arranged in a 3/6 pattern. A parapet, along with another platband, conceals the roof.

At the rear, there is a three-storey cross-wing with a rendered west gable-end and a truncated internal stack. This section includes 6/6 unhorned sashes and multi-paned fixed windows that date from the 19th century.

Inside, the cellar contains a former fireplace at the west end. The ground floor, which was originally three rooms, is now a shop. It features sunk-quadrant bridging beams with jewelled tongue stops. The rear room has an 18th-century cornice. An early 17th-century closed-string staircase leads to the attic, showcasing bulbous turned balusters, square newel posts with ball finials, and a moulded handrail. The first-floor front room, which was formerly two rooms, includes large-framed and fielded 18th-century panelling, along with a 19th-century marble fireplace and cupboards on either side. The cross-wing has a sunk-quadrant bridging beam with a jewelled tongue stop and a similarly decorated wall plate. The roof was replaced in the mid-18th century and features a front range of principals, two tiers of staggered butt purlins, and collars.
