Description

No. 135 on King Street is a mid-17th century house, likely originally with a shop. The front block was rebuilt around 1830 in stuccoed brick, while the rest of the building is constructed from brick and flint, topped with pantiled roofs. The facade features three storeys and a four-window range. There is a late 20th century shop front with fluted consoles on either side of the fascia board. Each floor above has four recessed 6/6 unhorned sash windows. The building has a bracketed eaves cornice and a bell-based gabled roof with one rebuilt gable-end stack to the south.

In the row, earlier flint and brick construction can be seen, including a blocked 17th century two-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window with diamond-section sub-mullions. To the west, there is an extension featuring an 18th century six-panelled door and surround. The rear of the building has two 17th century two-storey gabled projections, with the west faces rendered and each having two blocked windows.

Inside, the ground floor includes a re-used reeded 16th century bridging beam and a stick baluster staircase with a ramped and wreathed handrail. The first-floor front room has a sunk quadrant-moulded bridging beam with a jewelled tongue stop.
