Description
Credence House, originally a surgery, is a mid-18th century brick house located on King Street, Great Yarmouth. It has become a museum since 1981. The house is three storeys high with a three-window front. A six-panelled front door, the top four panels glazed, is situated to the right. The door has a simple doorcase, featuring plain pilasters and a hood with a modillion cornice and panelled reveals. The ground floor has two two-over-two sash windows on the left, each set within a gauged skewback arch and flush frame. Similar sash windows are present on the first and second floors. The gabled roof extends to connect with the adjacent property at No. 42. An internal gable-end stack is located to the north. The entrance hall and a room to its north on the ground floor feature a plaster cornice. An arched niche is found on either side of the ground floor fireplace. A stick-baluster staircase rises within the house, and incorporates a ramped and wreathed handrail. The front door is approached by four splayed steps, flanked by 18th century iron railings with square-section verticals terminating in spear-head finials above a plain top rail, which run the entire width of the house.
