Description

No. 57 on High Street is a building that dates from the mid-19th century but is based on an earlier structure from the early to mid-17th century, which likely originally featured gables facing the street. It stands three storeys tall and is rendered with a parapet, concealing a slate roof. The second floor has three windows, while the first floor features two sets of paired windows, all fitted with glazing bar sashes and panelled shutters inside. The ground floor has a mid-19th century tripartite shop front with a central entrance to the left and two windows on the right side. There are also mid-19th century railings with coped heads.

To the left, the building has irregularly spaced 17th-century windows with two and three lights, some of which are partially concealed by later additions. There is a low single-storey addition at the back, likely from the late 17th century. The rear of the building has two gables, one of which features a mansard roof. The windows at the back are from the 19th century or late 18th century, including a tall arched stair window, along with several 17th-century windows that have a Stroud-type design, featuring rebated chamfer surrounds, chamfered mullions, and drips. A cast-lead gutter head is also present.

Inside, the building features late 18th-century architraving around the doors and windows, two late 18th-century fireplaces—one adorned with a fluted frieze—and a low late 18th-century staircase with a ramped rail and a semi-circular well. The front room on the first floor (east side) has a spine beam that showcases 17th-century plaster moulding. Additionally, part of the west attic contains two plastered upper crucks.
