Description

No. 9 Stonegate Street is a house dating from the 17th century, with a late 18th-century brick exterior and an additional storey added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and has a roof covered with black glazed pantiles. It stands three storeys high and features an irregular bay system.

The entrance is marked by a panelled door located to the right, set within panelled reveals. The doorcase has reeded jambs and a metope frieze beneath a hood, along with a traceried overlight above. To the right of the door, there is one late 18th-century sash window with glazing bars and a gauged skewback arch. Each floor above the door has a sash window with similar details, and there are also sashes to the left of the door, with the ground and first-floor windows being tripartite. The second-floor windows are early 19th-century. The building features a low parapet and a gabled roof, with a west internal gable stack.

Inside, the ground-floor west room includes a chamfered bressumer over the fireplace and a panelled bridging beam. The rear west room retains 17th-century panelling and features three wall arches in the west wall: the outer two are semi-circular, while the centre one is elliptical, all supported by pilasters with exaggerated reeding. The two principal rooms on the first floor are also panelled, and there is a staircase with stick balusters.
