Description
No. 1 Stonegate Street is a house that was formerly a hotel and is now divided into flats. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of red brick with a machine-tiled roof. The building has two storeys and a dormer attic, arranged in four bays.
The entrance features a panelled door on the right, which is topped by a plain overlight and has panelled reveals along with a reduced metope frieze and a hood. On the ground floor, there are three sash windows with glazing bars, each set under gauged skewback arches, while the first floor has four similar sash windows. A dentil timber eaves cornice runs along the edge of the gabled roof. The roof also includes three flat-topped dormers that contain casement windows.
Internally, there is a gable-end stack on the east side above a rebuilt gable head, and a rebuilt ridge stack is located to the left of the centre. Additionally, in the left corner of the building, there is a rusticated stone gate pier that is part of the former premises next door.
