Description
No. 10 Stonegate Street is a shop with a flat above, originating in the 16th century but significantly altered over time. Fragments of the original timber-frame structure remain, while the exterior is covered with a 19th-century brick skin. The west timber-framed wall collapsed in 1988 and was replaced with breeze blocks. The building features a slate roof, is two storeys tall with a dormer attic, and has a 20th-century double shopfront with a timber passage door to the left. On the first floor, there are two late 19th-century sash windows. The roof is gabled with one gabled dormer, and there is a single-storey wing at the rear that includes a stack and is gabled to the main roof. Inside, the main ground-floor front room has a mid-18th-century pine corner cupboard with a round arch and dentil cornice, while the rear room is panelled. The staircase landing features a balustrade with turned balusters and an ovolo-moulded handrail. Some of the roof structure remains, indicating it was built using clasped purlin construction. The building is included for its group value.
