Description
The Maltings is a complex of maltings and warehouses dated 1868, as indicated by a datestone on the north wall. The building was converted into flats and offices in the 1980s. Constructed primarily of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, it features slate roofs. The south elevation faces Mill Fleet.
The building comprises four distinct elements. The east end is two storeys high with three bays, featuring late 20th-century two-light casement windows below segmental arches. It has a hipped roof, and its east return has a central doorway and two late 20th-century cross casements under the eaves, leading to a staircase. Adjacent to the east section is the former malthouse, also two storeys high with three bays and casement windows. It has a tall hipped roof with a hipped smoke louvre.
The next warehouse block is three storeys high with six bays. The basement floor is accessed through three narrow loading doors and one taller loading door in the second bay from the right; all have timber doors. Like the previous sections, it features casement windows. A gabled roof tops this block. The western element is irregular and whitewashed, standing three storeys high with three groups of former loading doors rising through the elevation, flanked by late 20th-century casements. One set of windows is missing from the eastern group of loading doors, which are now glazed. A gabled roof, hipped to the west end, completes this section.
The north front is three storeys high and includes a patch of gault brick near the centre, alongside the 1868 datestone. Two timber lucams have been glazed and incorporated into the design. Inside, late 20th-century staircases are located at intervals along the north side and at the east return, each stairwell accessed via a doorway. Corridors run along the north side. The roof structure has not been inspected.
