Description

Mildenhall Maltings is a former maltings building, now used as a warehouse, dating from the mid-19th century with later additions. It is constructed of red brick and features slate roofs, presenting a complex plan.

The exterior includes parts that are three storeys and parts that are two-and-a-half storeys high. The three-storey northern range is oriented sideways to the road and has three blocked windows on each storey, separated by plain pilasters topped with linking segmental arches. The north front has eight windows, with the first and second storey featuring cast-iron small-paned casements that include a central opening light, flanked by wide dividing pilasters and segmental arches. The ground storey windows are similar but have wide flat stone arches above and projecting stone sills. There is a recessed entrance door that is slightly off-centre.

The middle range is lower and has a row of eleven recessed blocked openings at pavement level and another row of eleven blocked segmental-headed windows on the first storey. The second storey features eleven cast-iron windows similar to those in the northern range, with dividing pilasters that rise above the plinth and have segmental-arched heads.

The southern range contains three rectangular drying towers with pyramid roofs that are now capped. Two of these roofs are linked, and there are two lower two-storey ranges that project eastwards from them, featuring paired hipped roofs. The street frontage has a four-window range on the upper storey, while the east side has a six-window range, with all windows having rectangular stone surrounds. The third drying tower at the rear has a three-storey range extending eastwards from it. The interior has not been inspected.
