Description
The Fornham St Martin War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, situated at the northernmost corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Martin, which is a Grade II*-listed building, next to the main road through the village.
This memorial is made of rough-hewn grey granite and features a wheel-head cross with a tapering, four-sided shaft. The north face of the cross-head includes five raised circular bosses: one at the center and one on each of the four cross arms. The shaft is supported by a tapering, four-sided plinth that sits on a single-stepped, square base.
The main inscription is carved in leaded lettering on a smooth, inset panel on the north face of the plinth. It reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ (14 NAMES)/ ALL OF THIS PARISH, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914–1919./ 'THEY DID THEIR DUTY.'/ ALSO OF (1 NAME)."
