Description

Macushla Cottage is a house that has been divided into three cottages, originating from two distinct building phases in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The structure has two storeys and attics, featuring a timber-framed design with 20th-century render and pargetted panels. The roofs are covered with pantiles and plain tiles. There is an internal chimney stack with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft serving Macushla Cottage, and another internal stack between the second and third cottages, which has small pilasters of triangular section running up the front.

The windows are 20th-century small-paned casements, and the doors are also from the 20th century. Nos. 1 and 2 originally formed a single three-cell early 16th-century house, which was fully storeyed and included a chimney stack between the hall and parlour. The timber framing is heavy and plain, with exposed studding, main beams, posts, and joists. There is housing for a five-light diamond-mullioned window. The west end of the frame has settled significantly, leading to the ceiling being replaced with later lightweight joists. At the east end, the partition that separated the service rooms has been removed, and a chimney stack has been added to the east wall, linking to a 17th-century extension that has a higher roofline, forming No. 3. This extension retains some good plain timbering and the remains of ovolo-moulded mullioned windows, with side purlin roofs.
