Description
Bleak House is a house that features an early 19th-century front, which may conceal an older core, and a mid-19th-century addition at the rear. The building has a three-storey front range with a basement and a two-storey rear. The front range is constructed of white brick, likely covering older timber-framing, while the rear is made of colour-washed brick. Both sections have slate roofs and end chimney-stacks.
The front facade includes three small-paned sash windows set in flush frames with flat gauged arches. The entrance is accessed by a short flight of stone steps flanked by curved railings, leading to a portico supported by replaced posts and featuring a wrought-iron balcony above. The double doors are topped with a segmental-arched fanlight.
The rear section, which faces north, has a pitched roof and features three small-paned sash windows in deep reveals, along with a circular blank window at the apex of the gable. A central doorway with a rounded arch is adorned with a semi-circular traceried fanlight and a blank window above. Inside, the front range contains small late Georgian fireplace surrounds and a notable geometrical staircase that rises the full height of the house, featuring plain balusters and a curved handrail. The house is oriented sideways to the road.
