Description
The walls to The Priory Hotel are designated as a Grade II* structure and include both boundary walls for the current property and sections related to the former Babwell Friary, which was refounded on this site in the 1260s. The walls are a mix of medieval, 18th century, and 19th century construction, made from flint, brick, and stone.
A 45-metre stretch of wall begins at the south-west corner of The Priory Hotel and extends north-east along Tollgate Lane towards Thetford Road for about 150 metres. This section is approximately 2 metres high and primarily constructed of rubble flint with red brick coping, featuring a mixture of old red brick and one section with red brick banding.
Inside the grounds, linked to this boundary stretch, is a 100-metre length of Friary wall, standing about 3 metres high, made of rubble flint and incorporating a pointed-arched doorway in 18th century white brick. To the north of the house, the wall continues for around 170 metres along Mildenhall Road, rising to more than 3 metres in height, built from coursed and random flint and divided into bays by 20th century brick pilasters. The remains of Babwell Friary are recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
