Description
Northgate Railway Station is a railway station built around 1847 by Sancton Wood, designed in the Tudor style using red brick and stone. The station features a symmetrical layout with low wings at the east end of both the north and south platforms, twin ornamental towers, and taller station rooms and offices at the west end. The east wings have end pavilions that project slightly forward, adorned with shaped open stone pediments and circular lunettes.
On the south side, there are three semicircular arches with concentric recessed brick arches above a stone cornice that projects over the brick piers. The ground floor includes 20th-century shops and a booking hall entrance, topped with a 19th-century cut and shaped wood canopy. The north wing showcases three elliptical brick arches separated by brick piers, rising above a brick parapet and stone cornice.
Twin square towers with lead domes rise above the inner pavilions, featuring semicircular brick arches and corner pilasters topped with stone cornices, lunettes, and strapwork. At the west end, two-storey blocks with gables and parapets project about 10 feet. The first storey has a 1:3:1:3 window arrangement with stone-trimmed two and three-light mullioned and transomed windows. Gabled wings, each with one window range, also project slightly at both ends, showcasing diapered brickwork. The ground floor on the south side has various windows with open semicircular arcades to the west, while the north side features semicircular arches with lunettes and a cornice above doors and windows, along with a wall displaying blind arcading to the west.
