Railway station. c1847. By Sancton Wood. Red brick and stone. Tudor style. EXTERIOR/PLAN: the north and south platforms have balancing compositions of low wings at the east end, twin ornamental towers and higher station rooms and offices at the west end. On the east wings, end pavilions break forward slightly with shaped open stone pediments and circular lunettes. The south side has 3 semicircular arches with concentric recessed brick arches above a stone cornice which breaks forward above the brick piers. The ground storey has C20 shops and booking hall entrance with a C19 cut and shaped wood canopy above. The north wing has 3 elliptical brick arches separated by brick piers which rise above a brick parapet and stone cornice. Twin lead domed square towers rise above the inner pavilions, with semicircular brick arches and corner pilasters surmounted by stone cornices, lunettes and strapwork. At the west end 2-storeyed blocks with gables and parapets break forward about 10 feet. 1:3:1:3 window range, stone trimmed 2 and 3-light mullioned and transomed windows on the 1st storey. Gabled wings, of 1 window range, break forward slightly at each end with diapered brickwork. The ground storey has various windows on the south side with open semicircular arcades to the west. The north side has semicircular arches with lunettes and a cornice above doors and windows, and to the west there is a wall with blind arcading.
