Description
79 Northgate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from around 1600. It features a timber-framed structure with roughcast rendering and a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with part of it jettied and supported by small solid brackets. At the back, there is a one-and-a-half storey lean-to.
The northern half of the building has two upper sash windows, each with a single vertical glazing-bar in a flush cased frame. The ground floor includes a plate glass shop window, with the entrance door located to one side in a plain wood surround. The lower, unjettied southern half has one sash window on each storey, also with single vertical glazing-bars in a flush cased frame.
Inside, there is no cellar and no visible structure on the ground floor. The rear wall has been removed, leaving two main posts encased in tiled pillars. On the upper storey, these posts feature long jowled heads and previously had arched braces. The ceiling in the south end of the upper storey is very low and intersects with the line of the sash window. The roofs were not inspected.
