Description

96 and 96A Northgate Street is a house, now used as doctors' surgeries with a flat above, dating from around 1600. It was altered in the 18th century and extensively restored in the late 20th century. The building is timber-framed with roughcast render and has a concrete plaintiled roof that was raised in the 18th century, featuring a mansard design with half hips. The layout is essentially a two-cell lobby entrance plan with an internal chimney stack that has four attached hexagonal shafts with corbelled heads, which are partly obscured by the later roof-raising.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics with mixed random fenestration. Most windows are now 20th-century replacements, including small-paned casements on the first storey and three 12-pane sash windows on the ground storey, all featuring slight reveals. There is one half-glazed 20th-century door. At the rear, there is a two-storey lean-to extension primarily made of red brick, which was previously painted. The back wall shows areas of older random brick mixed with Abbey stone, all covered by render since restoration.

Inside, the main range has three bays, including a narrow chimney bay, with some plain framing exposed. The ground storey features chamfered main beams and unchamfered joists set flat. The stair to the upper floors has been relocated to a new porch extension on the south side. On the first storey, there is studding and main posts with long jowls along the front wall, showing evidence of fire damage. The upper ceilings have widely spaced joists set on edge. The 18th-century mansard roof includes bisected rafters and straight braces, and within the attic, the chimney stack is made of Tudor brick.
