Description
Nos. 25, 26, and 27 Northgate Street is a row of three houses built in the early 19th century. The buildings are partly timber-framed with roughcast rendered fronts. No. 25 features a red brick gable end, while No. 27 has a random flint exterior with some reused stone blocks. The roof of No. 25 is slate, while Nos. 26 and 27 have black glazed pantiles with slates at the eaves level. Nos. 26 and 27 were constructed as a matching pair, each with two red brick gable-end chimney stacks and one internal stack, all featuring plain shafts, slightly corbelled heads, and chimney pots.
The houses are two storeys high with cellars, and each house has two windows on each storey, all of which are 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames. No. 25 is a slightly later addition, characterized by a lower, shallower pitch to the roof, ornamental ridge tiles, and two gable-end chimney stacks. It has two sash windows with a single vertical glazing bar in shallow moulded reveals on each storey. When No. 25 was added, all the facades were treated similarly, with a raised stucco band between the storeys, mock rustication on the quoins, and similar doorcases. The slightly recessed central doors, accessed by steps, have surrounds with plain reveals and fascias, as well as flat cornice hoods with console brackets. Above the doors of Nos. 25 and 26 are raised ornamental plaster diamonds, although this feature and the mock quoins are missing from No. 27. There are lean-to extensions at the rear.
The interior of No. 27 was inspected and features simple early 19th-century fittings, including a dado rail in the entrance corridor, fireplace surrounds with quarter-round mouldings and roundels, and a staircase with stick balusters and turned newels. There are no features indicating an earlier core. This row of houses is part of a significant group on Northgate Street and is included for its group value.
