Description
No. 110 Northgate Street is a house that has served various purposes, including as the West Suffolk Grammar School and later the West Suffolk College of Further Education. It has now been converted into offices. The building dates from the early to mid-18th century and is constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring a parapet and a moulded brick cornice. There are additions on both the north and south sides.
The exterior consists of three storeys and cellars, with a five-window range on the main building. The ground and first storeys have 12-pane sash windows, while the second storey features 6-pane sashes, all set in plain reveals with flat gauged arches. A central six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, is framed by a wood doorcase with engaged columns and an open pediment decorated with egg-and-dart ornamentation. This entrance is accessed by stone steps with wrought-iron handrails. The northern extension also has a five-window range, with its rear and end walls primarily made of flint and blocks of reused stone.
The interior has not been examined, but it is known that the cellar contains some Abbey stone in the walling, including a re-set head.
