Description
Dolphin House, formerly known as The Dolphin Inn, is a house that was originally an inn, dating from the late 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure with roughcast rendering and a plaintiled mansard roof, which has fishscale bands on the lower slope and decorative crest tiles.
The building has two storeys, a cellar, and attics, along with a long two-storey rear range. There are two end chimney stacks made of plain rectangular red brick with corbelled heads. The front facade has a two-window range, with 12-pane sash windows on the first storey and 16-pane sash windows on the ground storey, all set in flush cased frames. There are also two early 19th-century sloping-headed dormers featuring 8-pane pivotal sashes. The central doorway has a plain doorcase and a blank rectangular fanlight, with a late 20th-century panelled door that includes an integral fanlight. The rear range is finished with roughcast and pantiles.
Inside, the infill to the partition walls has been removed on the ground storey of the front range, creating a single open area that retains some 19th-century vertical boarding. Additionally, some small softwood beams are exposed.
